When the Knit Hits the Fan

I’m a relatively new knitter. My vice of choice is crochet but I believe possessing both skills is important. The fabric created by each method is of course different but also has it’s own benefits depending on what you want to accomplish. For me knitting is immensely frustrating at times but then all new to you things are and I will persevere.

I’ve had two knitastrophies now. The first, The Little Sister Dress, I didn’t have a clue how to fix and was so fed up I frogged it. The latest is a different story. I’m making Imagiro by Wooly Wormhead. It’s just plain garter stitch, it should have been easy. I’ve done garter stitch loads of times but this time it went terribly, horribly, scrunch up into a ball and fling wrong. Why you ask? Well I’ll tell you why. It’s cause I’m a rookie. The cable I chose wasn’t long enough at 24″ and I should have paid attention to my sinking suspicion that the needle was a bit wobbly. One needle disengaged dropping a good 5″ of stitches while some of the stitches at the other end threatened to jump off.

Overnight I figured out how to start the repair process. With a longer cable and ripping back enough rows so a full set of stitches were viewable, I picked up all 160 stitches and secured the other needle only dropping one stitch along the way. That stitch was rescued before it slipped to far . So the next time I’m a passenger I’ll need to be sure the stitches are facing the right way then take up this project and resume.

At the moment, I’m having a think of what I need to do  in these last few days while himself is here and able to wrangle a small person.

Oh and very happy new year! Hope your festivities were suitably awesome.
